Tent Permits

 

NJ Uniform Fire Code requires a Type 1 permit for all tents/canopies over 900 square feet. If multiple tents/canopies are closer than 5 feet they will be considered 1 tent requiring a single permit. If tents/canopies are over 5 feet apart 1 permit will be required for each tent/canopy. This applies to all tents used for commercial purposes.

When applying for a tent permit the following is required:

  • Completed application with $54.00 fee
  • A site plan showing the location of the tent/ canopy in relation to the property lines and other nearby structures
  • A floor plan showing the set up under the tent/ canopy including location and dimensions of tables or dance floor (only for 50 or more people)
  • A copy of the flame certificate from the tent/canopy manufacturer showing the fabric meets the requirements of NFPA 701

A fire safety permit is required if any of the following applies:

  • Tents/Canopies greater than 900 square feet (with or without side panels) will require a separate permit for each.
  • Tents/Canopies greater than 30 feet in travel distance in any one direction will require a separate permit for each. (Up to 140 feet)
  • Tents/Canopies containing platforms and bleachers up to 11 feet in height will require a separate permit for each.

A Uniform Construction Code Permit is required if any of the following conditions apply to a tent, tensioned membrane structure, or canopy:

  • If the tent, tensioned membrane structure, or canopy is more than 140 feet in any dimension. If the tent, tensioned membrane structure, or canopy exceeds 16,800 square feet. If the tent, tensioned membrane structure, or canopy contains platforms or bleachers greater than 11 feet in height. Note: Multiple tents within 5 feet or less of each other are considered as one tent and must comply with all requirements of this document and the NJ Fire Code.
  • If the tent, tensioned membrane structure, or canopy is up for 180 days or more. Tent, tensioned membrane structure, or canopy is set up January through March 31st and all of December.
  • Permanent anchoring system or foundation original installation. Installation on a portable anchoring system each time tent is erected.
